We took a field trip to New York this December to compare how advertising feels there vs what we’re seeing on Sunset.

This round we captured more character of the neighborhoods that line Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles.

As we begin to document context along with culture I’m reminded of how important it is to celebrate creative freedom. It felt important to say that considering the discourse of the past few weeks. A lot is being said, and thrown around but more importantly, much is being absorbed. Walking Sunset Blvd, soaking in (and slightly stalking) the LAers that roam free in the neighborhoods that line the BLVD I see and feel this beautiful and sometimes wild individuality. Posters, events, communication, art, and commerce all spilling out into the street and into the minds of anyone who takes a moment to greet it. And it’s captivating. In the same breath I want to emphasize how important our jobs are as marketers, creative directors, brand builders, influencers and all forms of creative and strategic communicators. What we choose to say (and not say for that matter) and how we package it MATTERS. Visuals matter. Words matter. Our work, my dear creatives and strategists, greets residents and tourist along this famous path with promise or plight and we all know that in some way it WILL influence them. Proceed with clarity and consciousness. With humor and excitement. But most of all proceed with integrity.

Walking Sunset BLVD twice a month is like tuning into a fav Netflix special. A live webcam of culture if you allow it to be. When you’re not there to shop but observe, the street changes. It becomes alive with little narratives and what if’s scenarios. For me I go the step further and cut the blvd into my own feature film, weaving plot lines and characters into my own Billboards Drama. This drop, we’ve began to throw in a little culture capture. Also we want to ask the burning question. What happened in London Debbie Harry?! We hope you enjoy.

It took us (summer, lets call her out) a minute to get the images up from our last month’s escapade. Images and crops that now dive deeper into how we actually SEE advertisements in whole or in part. Some of what we found was begining to take it’s own collage art form from the layers of art in context over time. Other Billboards took on new shape when seen through a telephoto lens or compounded with their space.
